robin hood's bay
one of my secret and unlikely dreams is to rent out a cottage on one of the quiet streets of this seaside town during the off-season, when the streets are damp and empty of holidaymakers and the grey sky runs into the water. i'd spend the mornings writing with a window open and the afternoons walking up and down the steep roads & secret alleys in search of a good cuppa. i'd let the drizzle fall on my head when it rained. that's my dream. i don't know why but there's something about holiday towns outside of the busy season that i just love.when i was a kid my family rented out one of the cottages here for a week one summer... my grandparents bedroom on one floor, my parents on the next, and me and my brother up on the fourth floor under the slanting roof with a skylight. there was a candy shop across the street and young girls set up a business down below our window braiding and threading people's hair. one rainy day my brother and i spent the whole day making a detective movie inside the cottage... shooting in different parts of the cottage and dressing up as all the different characters. and one evening as we ate around the kitchen table just inside the front door, a whole family came inside thinking we were a pub... good memories there. my grandparents live not too far away so whenever we're visiting we make a point to go, even if just for a short visit. i just love this place. i almost hesitate to tell you about it because a part of me just wants to keep it all to myself.
